Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt

Topping:

  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • Powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving

Instructions

1. Prepare the Bread

  1. Cut the brioche bread into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Arrange the cubes in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Make the Custard Mixture

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
  3. Gently press down the bread so it absorbs the mixture.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.

3. Make the Topping

  1. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  2. Stir in the pecans if using.
  3. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the soaked bread.

4. Bake the Casserole

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and set.
  4. Let the casserole cool slightly before serving.

5. Serve and Enjoy

  1. Dust with powdered sugar.
  2. Drizzle with maple syrup.
  3. Garnish with fresh berries or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • Use Stale Bread: Day-old brioche absorbs the custard better and prevents sogginess.
  • Overnight Soaking is Best: This enhances flavor and ensures a creamy texture.
  • Don’t Overbake: The casserole should be set but still slightly soft in the center.
  • Try Different Breads: Challah or thick Texas toast works well if brioche isn’t available.
  • Make It Extra Crunchy: Add more pecans or use crushed granola for a crispier top.

  • Cook Time: 40-45 minutes
