Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon paprika

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk for extra moisture)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Cheese and Add-ins:

  • 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ¼ cup green onions, chopped (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional for flavor depth)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pan

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or nonstick spray.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and paprika.

Step 3: Mix the Wet Ingredients

  1. In another bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter, and egg until well combined.

Step 4: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  1. Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently.
  2. Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese, green onions, and black pepper.
  3. Mix until just combined—do not overmix.

Step 5: Transfer to the Loaf Pan

  1. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  2. Smooth the top and sprinkle a little extra cheese on top for a crispy, golden crust.

Step 6: Bake the Cheddar Bread

  1. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 7: Serve & Enjoy

  1. Slice the bread and serve warm with butter, soups, or as a side dish.
  2. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Notes

  • Use Freshly Grated Cheese: Pre-shredded cheese contains anti-caking agents that affect texture—grate your own cheddar.
  • Don’t Overmix: Stir the batter gently to keep the bread light and fluffy.
  • Experiment with Cheeses: Try a mix of cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Gouda for extra flavor.
  • Enhance the Flavor: Add crushed red pepper flakes, cooked bacon bits, or fresh herbs.
  • Check for Doneness: Insert a toothpick into the center—if it comes out clean, your bread is ready.
