- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 cup white wine
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 loaf of French bread, sliced
- 2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
- Stir in the beef broth, white wine, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- In a baking dish, layer half of the bread slices, followed by half of the onion mixture, and half of the Gruyère cheese.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining bread, onion mixture, and cheese.
- Top with Parmesan cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
- Feel free to add cooked beef or chicken for extra protein.
- Serve with a side salad for a complete meal.
