Description

Make the best fried cabbage with bacon, onion, and garlic! A Southern classic that’s easy, flavorful, and perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
  • 6 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  • Cook the Bacon – In a large skillet, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove and set aside, leaving the grease in the pan.
  • Sauté Onion and Garlic – Add sliced onions to the pan and cook until soft. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  • Add Cabbage – Stir in chopped cabbage and mix well with the bacon grease. Season with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes.
  • Cook Until Tender – Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender yet slightly crispy.
  • Combine with Bacon – Add crispy bacon back to the pan, mix well, and cook for another 2 minutes.
  • Serve Hot – Taste, adjust seasoning if needed, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use smoked bacon for extra depth of flavor.
  • Don’t overcook the cabbage to keep a slight crunch.
  • Add a splash of apple cider vinegar for a tangy twist.
  • For a spicier version, increase the red pepper flakes.
  • Serve with grilled meats, cornbread, or mashed potatoes for a full meal.
