  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Enjoy authentic Greek Chicken Souvlaki with a flavorful marinade, grilled to perfection, and served with pita, tzatziki, and fresh veggies.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken Marinade:

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin (optional for extra depth)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for spice)

For Serving:

  • Warm pita bread
  • Tzatziki sauce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Thinly sliced red onions
  • Feta cheese crumbles
  • Fresh parsley or dill, for garnish

Instructions

  • Prepare the Marinade:

    • In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, salt, black pepper, cumin, and red pepper flakes.
    • Add the chicken pieces to the marinade, tossing to coat evenly.
    • Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours for deeper flavor).
  • Skewer the Chicken:

    • If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent burning.
    • Thread the marinated chicken onto skewers, leaving a little space between pieces to ensure even cooking.
  • Grill the Souvlaki:

    • Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
    • Brush the grates with a bit of olive oil to prevent sticking.
    • Place the skewers on the grill and cook for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is golden brown and fully cooked (internal temp: 165°F/75°C).
  • Assemble and Serve:

    • Warm the pita bread on the grill or stovetop for a few seconds.
    • Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce onto the pita.
    • Add grilled chicken, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and feta cheese.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley or dill, and serve immediately!

Notes

  • Use Chicken Thighs for Juiciness – They retain more moisture than breasts.
  • Marinate Overnight – For the most flavorful souvlaki.
  • Grill on High Heat – This creates a delicious charred exterior.
  • Serve with Fresh Lemon Wedges – A squeeze of lemon enhances the flavor.
  • Make it Keto-Friendly – Skip the pita and serve over a Greek salad.
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes (plus 30 minutes to marinate)
  • Cook Time: 12minutes
