Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Cook the ground beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, onions, and garlic until the beef is browned and onions are soft. Drain excess fat.
  • Season the meat: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, paprika, and thyme. Set aside.
  • Layer the ingredients: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the dish, followed by half of the ground beef mixture. Repeat the layers.
  • Prepare the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup, milk, and melted butter. Pour evenly over the casserole.
  • Bake covered: Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  • Add cheese topping: Remove the foil, sprinkle cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the casserole, and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes until cheese is melted and golden.
  • Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor: Add sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers to the beef mixture.
  • Make it spicier: Add red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Low-carb option: Substitute potatoes with cauliflower slices.
  • Make ahead: Assemble the casserole up to 24 hours in advance, store in the fridge, and bake when ready.
  • Storage: Leftovers keep well in the fridge for 4 days or can be frozen for up to 3 months.
