- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon ginger powder
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional for crispiness)
For the Orange Teriyaki Sauce:
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (from about 1 large orange)
- 2 tablespoons orange zest
- 1/3 cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
- 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1/4 cup water
Garnishes (Optional):
- Sliced green onions
- Sesame seeds
- Orange slices
- Red pepper flakes (for spice)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Salmon
- Pat salmon fillets dry with a paper towel. Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and ginger powder.
- Lightly coat fillets with cornstarch for a crispier texture (optional).
- Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Sear salmon fillets for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Step 2: Make the Orange Teriyaki Sauce
- In a small saucepan, whisk together orange juice, orange zest, soy sauce, honey (or maple syrup), rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and sesame oil.
- Mix cornstarch with water in a separate bowl to create a slurry. Slowly add to the sauce while stirring.
- Bring sauce to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes until thickened. Stir occasionally.
- Remove from heat.
Step 3: Coat the Salmon with Sauce
- Return salmon fillets to the pan and pour orange teriyaki sauce over them.
- Simmer for 2-3 minutes, occasionally spooning sauce over salmon to glaze.
- Remove from heat once salmon is fully coated and cooked through.
Step 4: Serve and Garnish
- Transfer salmon to a serving plate.
- Garnish with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and orange slices.
- Serve immediately with rice, quinoa, or steamed vegetables.
Notes
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh orange juice and zest enhance the citrusy flavor.
- Don’t Overcook: Salmon should be flaky but moist (internal temp: 125-130°F for medium-rare, 140°F for well-done).
- Adjust Sweetness: Reduce honey/maple syrup for a tangier glaze.
- Marinate for Extra Flavor: Let the salmon marinate in the sauce for 30 minutes before cooking.
- Spicy Option: Add red pepper flakes or sriracha for extra heat.
